Easy Paper Flowers

If you haven't figured it out yet, I love finding different ways to make flowers for cards, layouts, and other projects. So when I run across another idea, I just have to share!

Today's idea comes from Cards magazine. Hannah shares this fun and easy technique for creating these lovely vintage-looking flowers:

I wonder how this technique would work using tissue paper? Might have to try it...

Miniature Banner

I'm really in love with all things Maya Road right now. Here's another darling project by Melissa Phillips that I swiped off the MR blog today. Check it out here.

I'm feverishly working on more projects at home, both for Porter's and for Cindy's scrapbooking conference coming up on June 4th and 5th. I'm so excited for the conference, but there's always lots of work to do to get ready. I am teaching some classes there and will also have some kits for sale. I will post those over the next few days. So until then, happy scrapping!

AMAZING Paper Piecing on Ebay!

Quick! Look at this amazing paper piecing on eBay before it's gone! This woman truly has a knack for details. I looked and looked at her photos but was still surprised with the tiny details still to be discovered after reading her descriptions of each page. It's a beautiful piece of art! I think it would be cool if this was photographed and made into a children's book with peek-a-boo flaps and hidden elements. It could keep a child busy for hours!

Great "How-to" Blog

This is just a quick post to point you in the direction of a great crafty blog I found today. The Pursuit of Craftyness has contributions from some well known designers in the industry. I LOVE the tutorial index you will find down the right side of their blog where you can link to some great step-by-step instructions for anything ranging from how to color felt to making cards from recycled materials.

I really love this post about how to make your own journaling labels. I might have to try that with my QuicKutz dies.

There's some great inspiration there, so take a peek when you have some time! You can also become a fan on Facebook. They have a link on their blog for that as well.

Enjoy!

A Little Inspiration

I have always been drawn to the beach. Since I live in the desert, I have to get my fix from beautiful mountain lakes rather than the ocean. It doesn't stop me from dreaming about a cottage on the shores of a quiet, peaceful body of water somewhere.

This perfect image I've created in my mind might be why I'm also drawn to soft blues and shades of white, glass bottles, sand and textures, and shabby, rustic items. So imagine my delight when I stumbled across "The Old Painted Cottage" blog last night! If this interests you, scroll down through her posts over the last few weeks and you will be amazed at the transformation this cottage took! I'm not normally the kind of person that can walk into a house that started out the way hers did and envision the end result. But she has pulled it off beautifully! She has such a talent for displaying beautiful vintage pieces in her home and making them look as if they were made for that exact space. I'd love to curl up in the corner of her couch for a day with a good book.

Be sure and check out her cottage store here. Also, here's another site called Blue Ocean Traders and another called Mothology. I hope this inspires you too!

Another great Vintage website

While browsing through the Simply Handmade magazine the other day, I ran across a cool website that has vintage images and project ideas available. The Vintage Workshop has downloadable images for a small fee that you can use on jewelry, altered items, clothing, scrapbooking...you name it!

Their blog has some great ideas and step-by-step instructions for completing some cute and innovative projects like a framed chalkboard to give as a teacher gift or to use as a kitchen message board:
...and look at this pretty vintage pendant:

How about a fabric postcard you can actually send in the mail:

I love looking at pretty things. Although I don't create a lot of altered items, vintage art, photographs, and home decor inspire me.

Easy Paper Piecings

Have you noticed what's old is new again? Die cuts and paper piecings have made a big comeback in the scrapbooking world. In the past, I never was a fan of the die cut machine. But lately, I find myself creating large embellishments as accents and backgrounds more and more.

With all the personal die cutting machines out there, it's easy to cut a variety of designs in all different sizes. But what if you don't have access to one? Well, here's one solution...use your scanner!

I wanted to make a bowling layout for a class I was teaching and was inspired by a small sheet of Pebbles stickers. I scanned the stickers and enlarged a portion of them to make a pattern for the bowling pin and starburst. I cut the bowling ball with my circle cutter and made the finger holes with a circle punch. What an easy paper piecing!

In this example, I scanned a flower-shaped sanding block and used it as a pattern for my title block. Fast and easy! (If you don't have a scanner, try using a copy machine).

Another solution to easy paper piecing is to use clip art for a pattern. The internet provides us with literally thousands of free images to use.

I created this baseball layout for a scraplift challenge last year. The pattern for the ball came from Microsoft Word Clip Art. I handstitched the threads in the ball with red floss and extended it off the top of the page. It makes a big impact...at a glance, you know what this page is about.

Digital elements and printables are another way to make custom embellishments for a hybrid layout. Because you can change the color and size of the item before printing, the possibilities are endless. A great website to visit is Jen Wilson Designs. She has taken some of the embellishments from the Laundry Line and other paper collections she has designed, and turned them into digital images. You can purchase these accessories for a small price to use over and over again. These journaling dials are some of my favorites:

So the next time you are in need of some inspiration, look around you! Perhaps you can enlarge your favorite flower embellishment that is too small or turn to your old tole painting books for ideas. If you have some creative ways to make inexpensive accessories, please post it here!

Happy Scrapping!

Sketches

Tracy from Cropper's Cottage posted about this great sketch site called Sketches by Suzy. I'm not typically a sketch person, but she's got some really cute 2-page layouts posted on her blog. Is it just me, or have most people gotten away from creating 2-page layouts? Personally, I prefer making 1-pagers...sometimes it's easier to tell the story with one good photo and some journaling. But I have to make 2-pagers for the classes that I teach at the lss, so I make a lot of those too. Sometimes I really struggle to come up with creative ways to cover that much space unless I'm documenting an event like Easter or Christmas or birthdays. Then I could probably fill a whole mini album if time permitted. Soooo, it was quite refreshing to find this sketch site for 2-page layouts. Check it out and tell me what you think!

Vintage Clip Art

I ran across this awesome blog today called The Vintage Moth and thought I would share. I have always been drawn to vintage images and love the selection I found here! You can just click on an image and save it to your computer. Here's a few examples:

I think it's kind of funny that this little lizard is plopped in the picture among the beautiful butterfly and flowers!

Love this one!

Spring Flowers and Felt

Check out these cheerful spring flowers made by Kelly Purkey. I found them on the American Crafts website and thought they were so cute! I even love that she displayed them in a pop can...why don't I ever think of things like that?

Here's the link to the American Crafts blog where you can read all about making them. If I ever get caught up on my projects, I might have to whip some out.

Think about how cute these flowers would look on a card or layout. If you don't have access to the pre-cut felt flowers, try using a die cut machine, such as an Accucut. (Check your local scrapbooking store...they might have die cut machines you can use for free or for a minimal fee). You can make all kinds of cute embellishments with felt and die cuts for a fraction of the cost compared to buying pre-packaged ones.

I made some similar ones on this layout. But instead of sewing the buttons to the felt flowers, I threaded long lengths of thin green wire through the button holes and the flower. Then I twisted the leftover wire into stems. I also die cut the title from felt. It adds such a fun texture to any layout and is very inexpensive.

(Layout was made using papers from DCWV, stamps from Inque Boutique, ink by ColorBox, felt, rickrack, and buttons from my craft supply, Accucut dies, and a sketch from CTMH).

I found that glue dots and felt don't mix...the felt just ends up getting fuzz on the glue dot and it doesn't hold very well. So I either use Terrifically Tacky Tape or a tiny dab of liquid glue. So have fun and experiment! You might be surprised what cute embellishments you can make with felt.
