A Boy and His Covered Wagon

Our summer has been full of so many fun activities for the kids! In celebration of Pioneer Day in July, Cam participated in an around-the-block parade. He wanted to make a covered wagon, so we put on our thinking caps and came up with this:

We borrowed Grandma's gardening wagon and tied some large dowels in each corner. I gathered two edges of some muslin I had lying around the house (see...I knew it would come in handy some day!) and stretched it over some kind of flexible noise makers scrounged from the boys' toy box. Voila! A covered wagon!

So, here's the funny part of the story. The kids were walking around the high school...that's it. Just around the high school. No big deal. Cam starts off at a brisk pace. He was excited!

Here he is back at the beginning 5 minutes later. He looks a little tired. Even the wagon looks tired and droopy. This is probably why we weren't born 150 years ago. We wouldn't make very good pioneers.

We'll just let big brother pull the wagon back to the car...

  1. Wow... did those pics bring back some memories! I had forgotten how we used to decorate our bikes and wagons and strollers ... anything that had wheels... we would put cards in the spokes to have the cool sounds...and dress in our pioneer or patriotic wardrobe. I think we walked a few blocks and all of the ward members would sit out on the streets and cheer as we walked past. It's been forever since I've been on my scrapbooking links... I've missed alot! Thanks for sharing these... and triggering a long ago memory! Huggies! Vicki

  2. Nice wagon! We r making one for our great grand kids! I was wondering if I had to cut the canvas any certain way so I can gather it in the back? Do I just use a square piece? And sew a seam so I can insert the string? Thx for sharing and I am looking forward to your response! I will post pics when I get it done.....Mitzi :))

    1. Hi Mitzi!
I think my piece of fabric was more rectangular than square, but that might depend on the size of your wagon. I sewed a seam along opposite edges and then threaded string through each one. (It's much like a hood on a sweatshirt). Good luck! Can't wait to see your finished wagon!
